Tennessee Politicians have been working on a bill]that was aimed to break a logjam among state lawmakers negotiating over ethics legislation includes provisions already passed by the House and Senate. I have not spoken much on this issue, but it seems that if you really want ethics reform, don’t look to the legislature. Politicans (unless they are independently wealthy) cannot stay in business without cash. Special interest groups and lobbyists have cash but want certain legislation passed. So seems to me, that politicians (who need cash for campaigns) are not going to cut off their lifeline. What we will end up with is a “smoke and mirrors” bill that the politicans can go home and claim as “reform” and build in a back door so that when the “heat” dies down they can go back to business as usual.
I may seem cynical about this, but think about it. It is like putting the fox in charge of the henhouse. Before it is over your going to be missing a few chickens.
Ding Ding! We have a winner.
