Coulter and Cussing

With all the talk this week about liberal blogs being filled with profanity made me take pause. Do I do this?  I have been known to drop the F-bomb, I’m not saying I haven’t but I don’t recall it going on the blog. I guess I’m more of the Colbian school of this but I have sworn on other people’s sites.

Yup, I have.

I have a fine sailor mouth,(You should hear Homer. She has made it an art form) but of course, Big Daddy and various folks from Hooterville read this blog. I’ll cuss when I want to and I am partial to saying damn. I have know problem saying the words that use the word that is “fornication under carnal knowledge.” And yeah, I have dropped shit the s-bomb a few times.

I tried to be thoughtful about this. I really did. I have dropped a word or two but nothing that I think I would make people run for the hills. Sharon Cobb made a comment over at Hobbs’ place about Dick Cheney dropping the F-Bomb a couple of years back and that got me thinking.

Then, I hear about that Ann Coulter called John Edwards a “faggot” at a conservative conference and it seems to me this whole conversation lost its relevance. But Edward’s folks sent out an e-mail that was in my box this morning writing about it so I’m assuming his team is busy addressing it head on. She also said this “Our blacks are better than their blacks” and I guess she was talking about Republican African-Americans are a step up from Democratic African-Americans. She also called Barack Obama as “B. Hussein Obama.

*sigh*

So, I think this argument of trying to put people with different political philisophies in a box is just a distraction.

Listen, I would rather my nieces drop a dirty word here and there than call people ugly words and automatically say something is stupid just because they don’t understand it.

Yeah, we try to teach them not to cuss because that’s what you’re supposed to do and we try not to swear in front of them but it happens. But being ugly doesn’t have to have a swear word attached to it. And I think the word “faggot” is pretty damn ugly if you ask me. I think perpetuating the Obama “Hussein” thing was another non-subtle dig.

That’s just me.

I’m a big, fat, liberal, hippy mama and my blog has very few Carlin words. I don’t use them when commenting on others’ blogs either. The blogger who challenged people to count Carlin words in others’ blogs was just poking a stick in a very old nest to see if there were any hornets left.

    I think you’re right.
But you know, I think I thought about it too much. I have no idea why other than I’m a goofball that way.
I do, occasionally, use them on other blogs where I know it’s alright.
    I don’t want to say I haven’t because I do.

P.S. I love that you describe yourself as a “big, fat liberal, hippy mama.) :)
    You made my morning.

I rarely swear on my blog or others but I’ve always wondered why certain words are considered “curse” words? They are just words made up of the same letters of other words in the English language after all. Why isn’t the word “poop” considered a curse but the word “sh!t” is? Or why isn’t “Papa Smurf” considered a curse, or “lightning” or “spoon” or any other normal word? I’m sure someone with more knowledge of etymology than I would have an explanation but I just think it’s a bit silly that some folks think it’s ok to say “dang” but not “damn” – there’s only a couple of letters difference anyway.
Now that being said, “faggot” crosses the line into personal attack and that is unacceptable to me. But there is a world of difference between calling someone a faggot and saying “I feel like shit today”.

  4. newscoma says:

I guess the word “faggot” is in because it didn’t make George Carlin’s “seven” words.
I think you’re so right in your comment about the anatomy of language.
Coulter crosses the line into personal attacks constantly and should rightfully be called on it but it makes her the darling of the right. It’s all right, to her supporters, because she said it and she gets the attention. Sometimes I wonder if she is paid to take the hits in the sunlight while folks are doing other things in the shadows.
But the cursing thing is just another thing all together and became quite debated in the political blogosphere that anyone that doesn’t agree with a personal philisophy is automatically a “dirty, f**king hippie” and I’m just amazed. Nor do I think every conservative is out to send me to the gallows.
I’m really tired of the “I’m right, you’re wrong” philisophy on both sides of the political spectrum.
However, I do lean left because of social issues and it’s where I stand. I also like having a dialogue with everyone, no matter where they stand.
Alas, where do I fit in? ;)
And it’s all really bullshit. (See Big Daddy and local readers, I did censor but not really. OOps.)

Ann Coulter is as nasty on the oustside as she is on the inside. She is just mean. Instead of being able to find anything credible, she just simply insults people w/ nasty character defamations. And she can’t stand it that John Kerry is such a prettier man than she is. :)

    Finn, P.S. :
John H. is the first one who mentioned the George Carlin’s dirty words thing.
I’m not as clever as he is.

  7. hutchmo says:

I call BS! You are as clever as anyone I’ve ever met. I’m going with the great minds theory, myself, damnit!

  8. newscoma says:

    Hee.
You can say bullshit. It’s national cussing day here at the ‘coma.

  9. Lynnster says:

I just have to jump in to say I absolutely adore the fact that you have a category called “Asshats”. Hee.

  10. newscoma says:

    Why, thank you ma’am.

  11. Sharon Cobb says:

Republicans curse as much as anyone, and they tend to be more racist and homophobic when they do so. I’d much rather hear someone use the Carlin words, than the Coulter words.
