The Home Town Team Wins, And I’m Whupped
Saturday, March 10th, 2007Well, the team from our county, Gleason, won the state championship in Murfreesboro.
It’s actually a nice feel-good story. The coach has been at the school for years and this is his third state championship. His daughter plays for him and is a freshman. The senior won Miss Basketball. The coach is recovering from a bout of thyroid cancer. The team, probably not his most talented, still worked cohesively together.
But here is the thing I dig the most. The entire town literally came and it was one of those nice moments from small town America. And there was something so nice about it all. And you know, nice isn’t bad. I thought earlier today, when Squirrelly and I were so tired and I was leaning toward grouchy, how this world is in such a dark place.
And then something like this happens where a community follows a team of players and they have a really good day and you get to witness unadulterated joy over something as simple as a basketball game.
I’m really tired. I’m ready to get home to Mabel, the wonder dog, Homer and the entire crew.
That will be nice too.
