The Home Town Team Wins, And I’m Whupped

Well, the team from our county, Gleason, won the state championship in Murfreesboro.

It’s actually a nice feel-good story. The coach has been at the school for years and this is his third state championship. His daughter plays for him and is a freshman. The senior won Miss Basketball. The coach is recovering from a bout of thyroid cancer. The team, probably not his most talented, still worked cohesively together.

But here is the thing I dig the most. The entire town literally came and it was one of those nice moments from small town America. And there was something so nice about it all. And you know, nice isn’t bad. I thought earlier today, when Squirrelly and I were so tired and I was leaning toward grouchy, how this world is in such a dark place.

And then something like this happens where a community follows a team of players and they have a really good day and you get to witness unadulterated joy over something as simple as a basketball game.

mabel-in-chair.jpgI’m really tired. I’m ready to get home to Mabel, the wonder dog, Homer and the entire crew.

That will be nice too.

    I’m happy for you! :)

Now let’s talk about why we had to scour the internets to find your new address when you could have told us you were moving. And why aren’t you on the Lefty blogroll? :p
    :D

No one escapes TN420, especially if we like you.
I’ll update your link, good to see you. LOL :)

I was really happy when I heard Gleason had pulled it off. Love it when the small town kids win…big city teams enjoy the win, but it’s just another blip on the big city radar. small towns treat it differently and get absorbed. just another reason I love sports so much…pulling it all together.

Sorry I didn’t get to see you and Steph. Congrats again!

Hey, Cap’n, Good to see you. I tried to get back on Lefty and I never showed back up. Whassup with that. I’ll try again ’cause I miss it but I don’t know how to get my headlines back up on this template.

John, I’m home finally, and SQ went to the townwide celebration. (I’m bad, I opted out.) It was quite lovely and very sweet. You’re right, small towns immerse themselves in this and it is actually quite charming.

Y’all ought to be extremely proud. That was some fine ball-playin’ going on in the single-A competition. And what’s with everybody ganging up on Buffy the Free-Throw Slayer? That child could hit anything; didn’t they SEE that, or were they just panicking and fouling her because they were discombobulated? I loved how Mark Howard & Ron Bargatze were saying y’all’s coach needs to be a consultant for the NBA and teach those boys how to hit a foul shot. HA!

My alma mater won the triple-A girls, so that was good. Last time they went was my junior year in high school. It’s so great to see how all the girls who were stars on that ‘79 team did exactly what guys have done for years and turned their athletic renown and name recognition into business success.

Glad y’all had a good time!
