Sexier On The Sidelines

May 31, 2007 - Author: newscoma - Comments are closed

Reason 4,123 that I adore John H.

Actually, I like Fred T*. I do believe he’s sincere, but the truth is, he’s a lot sexier when he’s on the sidelines, pronouncing, observing, nodding sagely in the direction of the noise. Now that he appears to be actually within a few feet of RUNNING, some of the fervor, some of the facade will begin to show cracks. His wisdom will move from the general to the specific and people will actually find things to disagree with…

Read the whole piece. However, I do think that right now that Fred Thompson may be the guy that could win this for the Republicans. The thing is, I’m still fuzzy on where he stands on issues as I think John writes about quite eloquently here.

Democrats and Republicans are in a fervor over Thompson. I think it’s because he may have that Reaganesque manner about him from 27 years ago.  People love movie stars. For Dems, he’s dangerous. For the GOP, he could helped create a legacy that will get the bad taste of Bush out of folks’ mouths as Bush’s numbers continue to plummet.

And the thing is, not everyone votes on the issues but on who has the most swagger.

And Thompson has swagger.

Just opining on this Thursday morning.

We still have a year and a half to go, but this could be game-changing. Maybe, maybe not.

We will have to wait and see.

I’m not really sure a Thompson candidacy is that big a threat to the Dems. I mean, what experience is he going to run on? Two-bit actor, eighteen years as a lobbyist, or do-nothing Senator?

He supports “staying the course” in Iraq, and every position he’s advocated since he entered the Senate has been pretty hard to the right. I think most Americans are sick of that, and instead want real solutions to Iraq, the health care crisis, and global warming. I’d be willing to bet that a status quo candidate in 2008 is a sure way for the R party to lose.

The enthusiasm for this man on the right is understandable, since he’s all fluff and no substance. But beyond the 28% dead-enders, I just don’t see him garnering much support.

  4. It’s really all about the voters, Russ. I’m not a FT fan, but some voters like what they don’t go read about.
    Get my drift.

Sadly, you’re right. Most voters don’t think — they react. But something in my gut tells me that 2008 may be different. It’s dangerous to generalize based on anecdotes, but I will anyway — I just know too many otherwise disengaged people who’ve suddenly awakened over the last couple of years and said “Where are we going? And why are we in this handbasket?”

  6. Russ, I hope so. I’m trying not to be cynical right now about it all. I still haven’t decided who I want to be on the Dem. ticket.
I hope you are right and as for disengaged people, I think you have a point there because I’m hearing the same thing.
I got too optimistic in November, but then again, I realize there is more going on behind the scenes in DC than I’m privy too.
We really are in this handbasket these days, aren’t we?
Crossing my fingers, hoping your right.
