Bob Newhart And David Steinberg

As I was getting my PBS on last night, I was watching the special about Bob Newhart, who I have loved forever. I didn’t realize he was slyly political in his early days (nearly 50 years ago) and I enjoyed it.

SQ reminded me that I should have remembered that he sold the albums and that he had his politics going on back when comedy albums had a chance and won a Grammy.

Hell, I can’t remember everything. I know that Jonas Grumby was the Skipper’s real name on Gilligan’s Island.

What more do you people require of me? **sigh**

No, I didn’t remember, but I did remember that Suzanne Pleshette is one of the hottest women of all time and should be honored as such.

And, I remembered one of my first crushes on a television star.

Ohh, David Steinberg, how I loved you. When other people were crushing on David Cassidy and the Bay City Rollers (blech), I adored you.

Now, my boomerness is coming out here, I admit. If you don’t know, David Steinberg was the bomb.

He was on the Smothers Brothers, on Johnny Carson and about a million other shows. I can remember hogging the television set when I knew he was going to be on.

I liked him. He made me all tingly in my tween years, back before the word tween was a word and I was just a little snot-faced kid.

At 10, I thought he was just about the cutest thing ever, and he was smart. I didn’t know why I knew he was smart because I was just a goofy tow-headed child, but I knew he was my future ex-husband (yeah, I grew up in the 70’s, this was a given) and that he was just about the grooviest thing I’d ever seen.

So, I loved The Bob Newhart Show (Newhart, not so much although I thought Larry, Darryl and Darryl was absolutely inspired.)

And I got that funky tingle/true love adoration for David Steinberg, who was on the American Masters series last night talking about his buddy, Newhart.

Brad Pitt, you ain’t got nothing on David Steinberg. I love odd yet funny men. They are the best.

    “odd yet funny men?”

    Present.

    Oh, you weren’t calling roll?

  2. newscoma says:

    Well, umm, yeah.
I wasn’t calling roll but if you want me to put you on the odd and funny list of men, I can.
I can also say with utmost clarity that Don Rickles is not on that list.

  3. John Carney says:

The Newhart special was terrific. I enjoyed the interview series that Steinberg had on TV Land about a year ago, “Sit Down Comedy with David Steinberg.” It was sort of like “Inside The Actor’s Studio” for comics.

But you’re wrong about Rickles. I can’t wait to read his book, which was recently published.

  4. John Carney says:

Apparently, you can watch full episodes of “Sit Down Comedy” online:

John, don’t get me wrong. I think Rickles is hysterical!!!
He just doesn’t give me the Steinberg tingle. ;)

I have called members of my family “hockey puck” for years.
    :)

  6. newscoma says:

Ohhh. I know what I’m doing tonight. Steinberg. Woot!!!

  7. jim voorhies says:

the last episode of Newhart was the best last episode ever on TV. “You need to wear more sweaters.” Snork! Total Newhart line.

  8. newscoma says:

    Jim, you were right.
It was the best and a complete surprise.

  9. Ron says:

The Don Rickles documentary is hilarious. Even in his 80’s, he’s still got it.

I’m grieved cause I missed this.

  11. holly says:

Like Sista, sad that I missed it. Total crush on the deadpan little funny man. However, “Newhart” was where I fell in love with him, as it’s what was on when I was a kid.

I am also sad that I missed this. Newhart AND Steinberg? Sweet.
