Vampira

For folks like me who love horror movies, Vampira was an icon. When I was a kid, I just couldn’t get enough of the old movies that she would host (and I saw her stuff in reruns).

Of course, she was in Plan 9 From Outer Space.  Now I guess I could tell you she was sexy and naughty in the world of Sandra Dee, which would be accurate, but I think the fun thing about Maila Nurmi was that she did things her own way.

If you don’t remember, You Tube has a whole channel dedicated to her.

Man, Vampira was groovy.

And for horror geeks like me.

Necessary.

So I lift my glass of blood red wine to Vampira.

May she travel well into that good night.

I’ve seen “Plan 9″ several times. I coulda swore it was a comedy.

  2. newscoma says:

    Oh, it was. It was.
But still … spooky. I never knew ufos had wires attached to them.

One of my favorite songs by The Damned has always been “Plan 9, Channel 7″, which was of course a tribute to Vampira.

  4. newscoma says:

    Marc, I LOVE THAT SONG!

    Coolness.

  5. Russ says:

“Plan 9″ only reached the pinnacle of comedy when ‘Coma drunk-blogged while watching it. That was one of the highlights of 2007 for me.

I really need to get out more. ;-)

  6. newscoma says:

Me too. There is a Gatlinburg trip on the auction for my friend. I’m going to bid on it until I run out of money so I can get you out more.
    And me for that matter.
I WANT TO COME TO K-TOWN!!
Heh. Thanks for the nice words.

i had no idea she was 86 years old – she is yet another ‘formative influence’ on my youth, and dang if lots of such ‘influences’ are shuffling off more and more. that’s kinda creepy in ways that are NOT of the good.

I was the same. I watched her in the 50’s when I was just a budding Vampyre.
I was lucky enough to meet her in the late 70’s at a punk gathering at “the cash club”
in Los Angeles. She was gracious, and completely authentic.

May you rest, but get back up and do it all over again.
    Val
