The Nuances Of Lost

The one thing that I like about Lost so much is that it is mysterious, there are no heroes and yet everyone has heroic moments.

I have to say I knew a lot about certain things that were going to happen but I tried to keep an element of spoiler-free surprise. Yes, there was some big “doings” in last night’s episode but I think the things I like most about Lost are those small moments that say a whole lot and yet leave the viewer’s mind open to that person’s own interpretation.

Spoilers below so if you haven’t see Lost steer clear.

Those little moments from last night’s episode called The Beginning of the End were wicked and clever. I obviously don’t have a feel for this sadly shortened season but these were things that got me.

  • Hurley in his flash forward hitting all the baskets and Jack missing everyone. It’s a small thing but I think it said a lot.
  • Sawyer hanging back with Hurley who had just learned of his best buddy Charlie’s death. We know Sawyer is a killer and scoundrel but it is the small moments like this that make the character interesting to me.
  • Jack actually pulled the trigger on Locke. This may have sealed a deal because in Lost that sometimes happens.
  • Locke’s apathy toward Jack. Locke is going to do what he’s going to do. And, think about it, Ben shot him and he seemed to be fine. Did the island heal him? I’m thinking yes.
  • Once again, just because I need to write it for about the 100,000th time: Jack’s stubborness and unwillingness to have a conversation about the freighter. It makes me crazy that he makes a decision and damned the torpedoes.
  • Ana Lucia’s partner, Big Mike, showing up.
  • Did we meet a demonic presence tonight with the introduction of Matthew Abbadon?
  • Why was Rose cozy with Locke and bonding with him last season by telling him she knew he was the guy in the wheelchair and then she said in last night’s episode “I’m not going anywhere with that man.” I didn’t understand that.
  • What the hell is going on in Jacob’s cabin?
  • And, of course, Hurley’s mental health hospital buddy also seeing Charlie the ghostie (who looked surprisingly good.)

You’ll find recaps all over the web today, I’m sure. But it’s those little nuances that make up this show that makes me smitten with it. It’s smart television and viewers either love it or they don’t.

Personally, I find it to be smashing.

And if you haven’t done it yet and you have about 30 minutes of your life that you want to give up, be sure to watch the Lost Mobisodes.

Whoa.

Sharing Is Caring (0)

  1. Listen for the recurring line in the show, so noted in the Mobison you picture above, “He/You have work to do”

  2. I also was confused about Rose saying that and thought that I missed something in the finale, but maybe I didn’t. Going to go back and watch it anyway.

We have two new converts – watched it last night with two Lost virgins, and they’re hooked. One of them noticed, though, that Hurley says “never say never” to Jack, which is the same thing that Jack (later?) says to Kate at the airport. I totally missed that. But hmmmmmmm.

And what happened with the people who went with Locke? Ahhh, I want to know all NOW!

  3. Oh, and on Jack, yes, his reluctance to listen to anyone else’s ideas is maddening. BUT, knowing that he will later want to go back to the island makes me think that he will eventually open his mind a little bit to the possibility that not everything is black & white. Locke knows.

  4. Ahhh, Jack.

I was so thrilled to have the show back that I didn’t even write about my loathing in my recap. ;-p He’s so unchanging, isn’t he? Stubborn and blind to others. The flashforward from the end of last season has mollified me somewhat, though, because it shows he DOES experience consequences for his trenchantness.

As for Abaddon, I think it’s more complicated than the “evil” that most folks will assume. I went into great detail about it over at my place.

As for Rose, I think she harboured some anger toward Locke for blowing up the submarine.

    BUT

I also think the Island has a sort of duality to it–that it is both a heaven and a hell. I think perhaps Locke has embraced the wrong side of the Island, and Rose senses that.

  5. and as usual – i just watched it and loved – not thinking too hard. because damnit i have more important things to think about – like dinner tonight. and my hair and sex and my nails, of course.

i love to kid the intellectuals…

  6. I know I already put this on Twitter, but did you see who that was in the rocking chair? Also, check out the pic of Charlie’s hand – the sequence went by way too quickly to notice it during the airing.

  7. I go there all the time. What’s with the ghosties?

  8. I figured Rose’s new attitude toward Locke had something to do with him stabbing Naomi in the back and threatening to shoot Jack. But then again she was sticking with Jack even though he tried to shoot Locke in the face. Who knows….

At Sephinwall’s blog they’ve decided that the guy in the rocking chair is Jack’s dad and that Jacob may be using his body as a vessel. That would explain why it wasn’t in the coffin after the crash.

  9. ya know, one of many things I like about Lost is the way the plot and action are revealed thru character development, rather than the reverse. it makes for better stories and storytelling, plus offers metaphors by the truckload to fold into the concept of the show in general.

oh and i’m with you – Hurley was all bad luck before, and now he’s Mr Never Misses A Basket?

and the actor who appeared at the end of the episode last night, the parachutist, that’s Jeremy Davies, who has a career full of very creepy roles as mostly bad guys – he even played Charles Manson in the Helter Skelter remake on TV. His arrival is a baaaaaaad sign.

  10. I’ve been thinking about the Rose thing the whole day. If they didn’t seem to put nuance into everything, I’d almost chalk it up to a writing inconsistency. Of everybody on the island, with the exception of Ben and Locke, you’d think Rose would be the last to want to leave.

Plus, it was good to see Charlie. And nice to know that he may still be around, from time to time.

  11. [...] the episode was mostly about Hurley, Jack, and Locke, ‘Coma didn’t let Sawyer go unnoticed, mentioning his “hanging back with Hurley who had just [...]
