Tom Jones Insures Chest Hair?

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

I have no words …

The 67-year-old, who’s hairy chestwig has been a hit with the ladies over the years, has employed top insurance firm Lloyd’s of London to protect his lustrous locks.

One insider told the Mirror: ‘Even at the grand old age of 67, the ladies love Tom’s hip-thrusting moves and catching a sneaky peak of his famously rugged chest hair.’

$7 million.

I think singing “It’s not unusual …” wouldn’t apply here.

The Delusional Life Of Rush Limbaugh

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

The day that Rush Limbaugh fundraises for Hillary Clinton or any Democrat for that matter will be the same day that my six-inch Rat Corgi whom you know named Mabel will drive a car and teach astrophysics at the local college.

I’m just saying.

Reason #712 I Adore Hutchmo

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

But, for the love of God, Huckabee doesn’t believe in evolution and supports the abolition of the income tax (to be replaced with a repulsive national sales tax…that house costs HOW much??).  McCain has a solid conservative voting record and apparently supports the second coming of the 100 Years War.

So, it’s not like we are getting any real moderates coming from the grand old party..just some folks that don’t march lock-step with the right right.

At the very least, I’m grateful for that much…

I vote Hutch for president.

And then go here for the “Looks Like Mitt Romney … ” clip also from Letterman.

Dave’s gonna miss him.

Me, not so much.

Anything that can punch and bite me at the same time just wigs me out.

Out Of Memphis

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

Monkeyfister out of Memphis is asking for some help for the victims of Tuesday’s tornados.

Tragic. I pray that peace, kindness and hope can find each and every one of those touched families.

I’ve been looking around for some local centralized relief group/agency… Someplace.

Right now, I recommend the:

American Red Cross
Mid-South Chapter
1400 Central Avenue
Memphis, TN 38104
901-726-1690

And:
United Way of the Mid-South phone in a donation at (901) 433-4300.

They take DIRECT donations, so you can skip all the National-level waste and delay, AND they serve nearly every community in the effected radius.

I don’t ask for much from my readers, but I sure would appreciate some link love on this post– or better yet– if you’d work-up something of your own linking to the Mid-South Red Cross Chapter to help this area get back on it’s feet, re-building, and healing. It’d mean an awful lot to many. A bit of a small-blog swarm would be a mighty thing.

MonkeyFister live-blogged the storms on Tuesday and has been keeping an ongoing journal of what happened in Memphis.

Plagiarizing A Blogger

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

This is odd …

On Jan. 31, The Daily Toreador’s editorial board was made aware by a Texas Tech faculty member of an instance of plagiarism.

Columnist Ty McDonald took direct statements, ideas and content from “Plagiarism and intellectual loot,” a post on Christiaan Briggs’ Weblog located at http://last-straw.net for two of his articles: “A new way to think about thoughts” and “Plagiarism is not a sin.”

Plagiarizing  an article on plagiarism not being a “sin?”

Very bizarre. Needless to say, McDonald was canned.

There is irony here, you know.

Hyperlocal News

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 07-02-2008

Have you ever had so much going on that your mind becomes like the bits of tofu you find at the bottom of a bowl of miso soup?

Yeah, that’s me.

I keep rattling on about rural newspapers this week. I’ve been busy in the non-virtual world and I’m thinking that folks might not understand a few issues of what we do and how we do it.

We have two writers which doesn’t include sports. And we end up running around like chickens when a lot of immediate breaking news is going on so we have to multi-task. We also build our own pages although we finally, after much crying and wailing with the extra goodness of me holding a razor blade to my throat, finally got a pagination technician. I build Front, Editorial and Public Record and then anything else that might need to be done last minute. Then it goes to the other writer, Batesville, who copyedits and puts the final touches on it. Our tech builds the pages that focus on community news and special advertising supplements/sections. Our office manager is also the community editor who also builds society, obit and “people” pages. Our circulation director is also the classified manager. Yep, she does the classified pages. Those two women also handle billing and work the reception desk.

We do not have a typesetter.

We are a small newspaper so we take on different roles. Why am I telling you this?

I sometimes don’t think people understand that we don’t have a newswire. Everything we do is local. We have to generate all the copy in the paper. Now, mind you, the community submits columns and the like but usually it’s up to us.

Jerry Reese, the GM of the New York Giants, is from our area and coached for awhile at the college. When they won the SuperBowl, needless to say, we couldn’t send Squirrel Queen to take photos so we had to ask permission to use an AP picture. He has a lot of local ties and it was big news. “Local Sports Hero REPRESENTS” kind of thing.

Another person we follow is Chad Clifton, who is from the paper’s hometown, and now plays for Green Bay. We are more fortunate in finding pics of him because we know his mom and dad. He’s going to his first Pro-Bowl. Once again, SQ won’t be headed to Hawaii.

Get where I’m going here?

One buzz word on the web and in the news biz right now is hyperlocal.

We sorta get that concept.
