Cell Phones In The Lead Picture On CNN

Don’t look at Obama although he is smiling quite nicely for the cameras.
And … apparently there are hands filled with cell phones.
Yeah, look at the … cell phones.
A new world on the front page of CNN’s website.
Media is changing.
Just thought it was interesting.

At The End Of Another Political Day

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

I’m pondering politics this evening in the way I do which means, regardless of what people think, I try to balance it out. Yeah, we know Huckabee won Kansas and we know there is a ton of counting going on right now.

We also know that Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama will still be sparring it out on Monday when it’s all said and done which sort of saddens me. We also know that certain members of the GOP are very unhappy about John McCain being the frontrunner, which campers, he still is.

My sis, Homer, made a statement recently that made some sense to me.

“He was a moderate wasn’t he?” she asked.

“Well, no,” I said thinking that wasn’t right but that I also believed that was the perception. “But a few years ago he wasn’t George Bush so he had that going for him.”

“Well,” she said decisively. “He apparently made some sort of deal because didn’t he hammer at Bush like crazy in the past and then suddenly he was like his best friend and trying to convince everyone he’s a conservative this last week. I don’t get that. Did he make some pact with Bush or something?”

I shrugged. No one never knows in the world of politics. Deals are made. Deals are broken. And the American people don’t know because God forbid we need to know what Britney Spears did today. That apparently is more important for crying out loud.

Hell, Rush Limbaugh and Ann Coulter say they will fundraise for Hillary if he wins the nomination but, you see, my sis is an issue reader. We know that is B.S.

With two tween girls, the television is usually glued to Miley Cyrus making a million dollars a day so Homer’s not drowning in news like I do on purpose. And if she’s saying this, I wonder about it’s merit. Her time is scarce and when it comes to politics, she digs in and she has to digest things quickly without Fox News yelling at her or Lou Dobbs telling her things are broke.

Because, here, we believe there is a lot broken but it’s our country. And, by gum, it can be fixed. It will take hard work, but it can be repaired with the right leadership who concentrates on making things right and getting it together.

You see, Homer is a pretty astute woman. And she remembers things like an elephant. And she remembered McCain’s big change of attitude. She also doesn’t dig mice and is phobic about snakes but I digress.

I thought about this. I’ve heard this before.

But here’s what I’m thinking tonight.

What’s going on in Louisiana? A state that suffered the worst natural disaster in my lifetime in this country then was ostracized by many for just being New Orleans, an event so devastating that it got me to blogging, quite frankly. What will those folks do?

What will those states that have been ignored unless it was politically convenient, what will they do?

So much to think about. So much to dissect.

And Obama took Washington and Nebraska.

Ron Paul says he won’t run third party. Why? Isn’t that was folks want?

But what about the superdelegates?

So much to ponder in this silly little blog post.

I need an Advil and a glass of Merlot. It won’t help me figure it out but at least it will numb the buzz of this election year.

Emma Peel

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

When I was growing up, I really thought the coolest thing in the world would be to have the life of Emma Peel from the Avengers. I realize I’m showing my age here but damn if she wasn’t the sexiest, coolest thing walking.

[youtube=[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gMewkX0-aw&rel=1]

Yeah. I didn’t know if I wanted to be her or marry her. She was mod and sexy and could kick the crap out of anyone. And in a black leather catsuit no less. Awesome.
She also would, on occasion, find aliens.

It was my destiny to have the cool, groovy destiny of Emma. Alas, I was about 12 when I started watching The Avengers and it had already been off the air for a few years. I’m always a day late, a dollar short.

Man, Emma Peel, how I loved thee. Let me count the ways.

Yahoo To Reject Microsoft’s Offer?

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

In a bid to remain independent, Yahoo plans to reject Microsoft Corp.’s unsolicited takeover offer, according to reports on the Wall Street Journal’s web site.Quoting sources familiar with the situation, the Journal reports that Yahoo’s board feels the offer of $31 per share “massively undervalues” the company. A letter spelling out the position is expected to be sent Monday. Yahoo also expressed concern that Microsoft’s offer does not account for risks to Yahoo should the deal be overturned by regulators.

The Journal source said the company would be unwilling to consider an offer below $40 per share, which would represent a $12 billion increase over Microsoft’s original $44.6 billion bid. It is unclear if Microsoft would be willing to increase its bid by such a significant amount.

Yahoo representatives could not immediately be reached for comment.

That’s what they are saying at Yahoo Business.

Man Hides Wife In Drum for 23 Years

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

As I am a slob and hate cleaning more than anything especially when I’m outside where fresh air and trees just make me about plum anxious and frightened, I am validated about avoiding yardwork with this story out of Australia.

MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — A man who hid his wife’s body for 23 years in a steel drum in the couple’s suburban Australian backyard was convicted Saturday of her murder.

Frederick Boyle, 58, claimed he hid the body of Edwina Boyle out of panic after finding her dead in bed at their home on the outskirts of the southern city of Melbourne on October 6, 1983.

He had pleaded not guilty to her murder at the outset of his weeklong trial, but a Victoria state Supreme Court jury found him guilty Saturday.

Boyle told the court this week he found his 30-year-old wife dead in bed with two bullets in her head and one of his neckties around her throat.

Boyle had told his two daughters their mother ran off with a truck driver, but a son-in-law found the remains in the 170-liter (44-gallon) drum while tidying the yard in October 2006

If his son-in-law had not been “tidying” the yard …

Okay, justice was served due to tidiness.

Self-Promotion Is The Spice Of Life

I just wanted to shill for a moment about some of the places I’m writing online right now. As I’m the only one that can effectively shill for myself, I’m playing the role of carnival barker today.

First of all, I’m a contributor at Teevieo where I talk about television. Today’s entry is about that Jonny Fairplay is an asshat. If you watch Survivor, then you know what I’m talking about.

I’m also writing at Popular Fidelity which is, in a word, awesome. I’m handling unusual news and nation/world entries. Cool, cutting edge and growing. I told you Adams Briscoe was a-grade groovy but Noooo, you didn’t believe me. But he is. And so is Pop Fi.

I’m also working, although I didn’t get to go to the meeting on Thursday, at Music City Bloggers which is a joy. I’m all fancy and even have a title. Usually it’s “Hey ‘Coma” but it’s a title nonetheless.

And occasionally I have a post or two over at TennViews. I want to thank R. Neal for letting me a part of that as well.

As the car is freaky, I didn’t get to go to Podcamp either but I’m sure it was pretty damned skippy. I really wanted to go as I used to be in radio and I’m sure there is a great deal that I could have learned.

Now, why am I not in your feedburner at all these groovy places including Chez Coma?

Heh. Going to drink a Fresca and watch Ninja Warrior. Yeah, I lead an intense life of glamor and intrigue.

May Or May Not

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

I had to put something else up because everytime I come to this page I see Fred Phelps name and it was grossing me out.

Sometimes I do that. Opine on something and then think “man, why did I opine on that?”

Blech.

With that said, I want to direct you to this story in which Colin Powell says he may or may not vote for a Republican or a Democrat.

Umm, okay.

I may or may not eat a Little Debbie Nutty Buddy later in the day if there is one lying about the house.

I may or may not go and stare at my ailing car who we are calling Mitt Romney because it’s suspended running for the time being.

I may or may not consider that sometimes news may or may not be news.

I guess I’ll go read about Britney Spears now. She may or may not be sober.

Fred Phelps

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

The church owned by whacko Fred Phelps is picketing again although I think that goes without saying because he would picket and protest the sun rising if it would get him in the local papers. I try not to be too blaming here at Chez Coma but when it come to Westboro Baptist Church that rule doesn’t apply as I’ve had some personal interaction with these folks about a year and a half back when one of our National Guardsman was killed in Iraq.

The family never saw them but I did and even now, when I think of them, bile just rises in the back of my throat.

So, after picketing across the country at the funerals of fallen soldiers, they have now set loftier sites to harassing folks and being completely inappropriate with a dogged vehemence of totally regarding any semblance of compassion for people in the midst of grief. Recently, it was Heath Ledger’s funeral because, for God’s sake, he was a straight actor playing a gay cowboy in Brokeback Mountain. Now, they are picketing the funerals of those people killed at an Illinois mall in a shooting a a Lane Bryant and Baltimore attorney James Browning who was murdered as was his wife and two young sons by his oldest son last week.

Feb.9th Caucuses And Primaries

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 09-02-2008

Left Wing Cracker is the king of staying on top of things when it comes to the democratic party. He really is. He sent me this yesterday and I thought it was really well done so I thought I’d share it as a primer, if you will, on what is at stake this weekend for the presidential election.

From Open Left:

  • Washington caucuses, February 9th. Starts at 4 p.m. eastern: Obama 53%–40% Clinton. Survey USA, 2.2-2/3. 78 pledged delegates are up for grabs, and both candidates are on the air and campaigning on the ground in Washington. With a caucus and a double-digit lead in the polls, Obama is heavily favored here.
  • Louisiana primary, February 9th. Polls close at 9 p.m. eastern: No polls to report, ever. What polls there are wouldn’t be of any use anyway, as we saw in the primary challenge against William Jefferson in late 2006. I can report that there are 56 pledged delegates at stake, and that Jesse Jackson won here in 1988. Both candidates are campaigning on the ground and over the airwaves. Obama is once again favored. Polls close at 9 p.m. eastern.
  • Nebraska caucuses, February 9th, ends at 9:30 p.m.: Once again, no polls to report, ever. We will probably see results trickling in from Nebraska all day tomorrow, since the caucuses start as early as 11:00 a.m. eastern in some places, and end as late as 9:30 p.m. in others. Obama has dominated caucuses in Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota and North Dakota. He also won a little caucus that was held in Iowa five weeks ago. This is big time Obama territory, and Clinton is not even visiting the state. I expect another 2-1 Obama victory in pledged caucus delegates from here.
  • Virgin Islands, convention, February 9th: Beats me how the three pledged delegates will break. Expect either 2-1 Obama or 2-1 Clinton. Then again, as telephasic points out in the comments, it will probably  go 2-1 Obama, given that the island is 76% African-American.
  • Maine caucuses, February 10th, starts as early as 1 p.m. eastern: There hasn’t poll a from here since April, when Clinton led 39%-22%. Of course, Clinton led everywhere back then, so who knows. No clear favorite, with 24 pledged delegates at stake. This is probably Clinton’s best chance for a win this week.

Chris Bowers breaks it down quite nicely about what’s happening today and tomorrow. With that said, one thing I’m hearing on the streets in my village is the discussion of delegates vs. superdelegates. I’m actually pleased about this because I can’t remember this being discussed so fervently in the past as it has been this year.

And, a Nashville blogger is running for delegate status so if you are so inclined, head here.
