I’m watching television this morning and watching so many people talk about how the economy has impacted their quality of life. There are going to be cynics out there that are going to say certain things about “tighten your belts” or the like but it’s true.
Money is obviously a burden if you don’t have it. I’m waiting to win the lottery (I keep forgetting to buy a lottery ticket) but the realities are that if you are paying out more money for basic needs, and you don’t have much money to start with, your quality of life suffers. Our national leaders and candidates talk about the average man and woman but they don’t get it. Insurance companies, gas costs (there is no public transportation in most of the country so you have to get from point A to point b which is usually the job. It’s the reality) and hikes in food costs are hurting a lot of people. So people find refuge where they can.
Most folks I know are trying to keep a sense of humor about it, but it’s those common sense things that are happening locally, statewide and nationally that are so blatantly ignored by our leaders that makes me take pause and makes me grit my teeth.
Common sense things that are so obvious that are talked about with such flippancy that it sometimes is amazing that we aren’t having adult conversations about it. If gas is a third higher than it was a year ago and you are making the same money, if food costs are higher because of gas costs getting the food to you, then it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out people are sweating.
So what does one do?
It amazes me. Sometimes life is a series of issues such as luck while other times it’s about hard work. Davidson College worked just as hard day-in and day-out as Kansas did. They ran out of time Sunday. Hard work is great but it doesn’t mean you are going to get the big prize.
You’ll get CLOSER to the big prize but it doesn’t guarantee ultimate and total success.
As I get older, I’m becoming more aware of “running out of time” to get to the next level. The next level isn’t fame or fortune, it’s quality of life with contentedness and without worry. Because I fret more now than I ever thought was possible. Why do I worry? Because I’m not in control of my destiny. Destiny is a series of actions such as hard work, luck, coincidence and good timing.
Timing is everything. I’ve always said that you need to know when to jump through the windows of opportunity. And that’s the fear. You jump, you have three things that might happen. First, you crash and burn. Second, you hover mid-air indefinitely and Third, you are in a new exciting adventure.
Willingness is a funny thing. Are we willing to make those sacrifices to get where we want? Do we even know where we are going? And what further sacrifices do we make?
Yeah, I’ve been sick as a dog and it’s wearing me out a bit. I’m worn out, so I’m thinking about odd, unusual things this morning.
