Pike Fights

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

No, you probably don’t know what this is, or maybe you do. But I have been watching Frat boys beat the hell out of each other in boxing matches for charity tonight.

I would love to tell you about the brutality of it all, but I must say it was quite impressive. And, yeah, they raised a lot of money. It wasn’t really boxing really but … hell, I don’t know what it was but for eight bouts, I watched some boxing, some smacking and one guy get addled. Poor kid got walloped.

I even hooted a few times. Here’s some video from last year I found online. It makes me laugh because it’s exactly what I saw tonight

I must admit I’ve never been to a Pike Fight, but when I got there with a gaggle of my friends, I found myself fascinated. I used to love boxing in the days of the Wide World of Sports when Ali and Ken Norton used to box. I don’t know why I dug it, but it was fun.

Why was I fascinated this evening? I have no idea.

But it was fun.

I can’t help it but it was glorious. It wasn’t a Preds game, but damn if I didn’t yell and laugh.

When you live in Hoots, you do what you have to and sometimes it’s a blast.

Squirrel Queen’s Legion Kicks Butt

For Squirrel Queen, as she prefers Miller Lite to Bud Light. Her legion of rodents are strong.

I am so easily amused.

Finger Puppet Candidates

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

Because you know you need it, finger puppets of the three remaining candidates for president.

The FoldUSCandidate site.

I’m trying it out right now.

I think everyone should do this craft right now. I am not a craft kind of person, but this is one I think children far and wide will love.

America

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

Over the past weeks, I’ve watched bloggers I respect suggest that anyone who is against Hillary is a misogynist or that anyone who opposes Obama is uninspired.

What will it take for those of us who are engaged in political debate — and that includes the media — to realize that it’s about America?

It shouldn’t be about race. It shouldn’t be about gender. It shouldn’t be about rich or poor or business or labor or Republicans or Democrats.

It should be about America.

He’s right. It should be about America.

Read the rest of this post because there’s a whole lot more. It’s really good.

Reelfoot Lake

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

When I was a kid, and I’m talking about five-years-old, I used to confuse earthquakes and volcanos. I was terrified of volcanos for some reason, but I would get the words messed up and ask my mother if west Tennessee could have earthquakes.

Of course, she responded “Yes” and I would freak out thinking she was talking about volcanos. I know, I must have some sort of dyslexia about natural disasters.

Anyway, she noticed that I was wigging out and was constantly asking about earthquakes that I thought were volcanos.

Confusing, I know.

So she took me to Reelfoot Lake. We would go eat catfish (it’s famous for that) and there would be these paper placemats at the restaurant that told the history of how the lake was created. I distinctly remember there was a cartoon of an Indian on the placemat and as I got older, I realized that it was a bunch of hoo-haw regarding the real history of the creation of the lake, but still, it cleared some things up.

I finally understood the difference between earthquakes and volcanos. But then I would look across the lake and this overwhelming sense of “OH CRAP” filled me.

For nearly 200 years, west Tennesseans have been saying “It could happen again” but it never has.

Of course, this morning’s earthquake was a reminder, that indeed, it could.

The history of Reelfoot Lake is here. There are few written accounts about how it all happened but it was devastating.

And, yeah, I now know the difference between an earthquake and a volcano. Shut up.

Introducing Keith R. Judd

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

So in our news of the day, I introduce you to Keith R. Judd. No relation to the singing sensation of the 80s known as The Judds to my knowledge.

If you were having doubts of who to vote for president, Mr. Judd would like you to consider him for the highest office in the land.

Of course, Judd is in prison until 2013 in Texas, but that didn’t stop Idaho from putting him on the ballot.

A federal prison inmate got himself listed on the ballot for Idaho’s May 27 primary as a Democratic presidential candidate, the state’s top election official said.

Keith Russell Judd is serving time at the Beaumont Federal Correctional Institution in Texas for making threats at the University of New Mexico in 1999. He’s scheduled for release in 2013.

Judd, 49, qualified for the ballot by submitting a notarized form and paying the required $1,000 fee, state Secretary of State Ben Ysursa said. As a result, Democratic voters will be able to choose between Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and Judd.

“We got conned,” Ysursa told The Spokesman-Review of Spokane, Wash.

Yes, I believe that con is a good enough word for what happened here.

Here, my friends, is the government taking care of business.

Betcha five bucks he even gets some votes.

Judge Sets Bond at $5 Mil In Domestic Violence Case

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

I don’t get people. I swear sometimes I don’t.

A judge has ordered a $5 million bond for a man accused of caging and shooting at his new bride.

Matthew George is accused of handcuffing his wife, Mary Swihart, and putting her in a dog cage the size of a 4-foot cube.

Police say the 28-year-old also fired several shots at her feet while their 15-month-old child was in an adjoining room.

George faces charges of abduction, felonious assault and domestic violence.

Okay, George put his wife in a cage, shot at her and is an abusive, crazy person.

The judge set the bond at $5 million. This judge, in my opinion, is a rock star and awesome.

Updated:Tremors

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Tennessee | Posted on 18-04-2008

I woke up this morning doing my regular routine, which is of course, is sitting and staring aimlessly while the coffee was brewing.

All of the sudden, my recliner began to sway and Mabel came running into the room looking at me with this “Oh Crap” look on her face.. The glass with last night’s water shook as it sat on the table beside me, making the water gently move.

It lasted about five seconds.

I know we have small tremors here all the time. We are close to the New Madrid Fault. I’ve never “felt” one before.

It woke up Squirrel Queen, who came into the living room.

“Did you feel that?” I asked.

She nodded and said, “I’ve only felt them a couple of times before but never for that long and never that strong.”

Now this wasn’t a California-Falling-Into-The-Pacific sort of tremor, but it was strong enough to wake her up and for me to feel it. As I’ve said before, I’ve never felt one but the dogs have been acting weird since last night.

Strange.

UPDATE: Apparently what we felt was more than just a tremor. Apparently Southern Illinois was rocked with a 5.4 earthquake this morning at 4:36 a.m. With this said, if we felt in Weakley County, Tennessee, it must have had a little more girth to it than we initially thought.

Here’s the report from CNN. Guys, it was weird.

UPDATE TWO:  Ron felt it too. Much stronger than us though.
