Huffington/McCain
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
Arianna Huffington schools John McCain.
The latest example came late last week when the Straight Talk Express hit an oil slick and skidded off the road. Click here for the blow by blow, but, in short, McCain implied that Iraq is essentially a war for oil, then tried to take it back, explaining that he was actually talking about the first Gulf War, then, when pressed, denied that he was actually talking about the first Gulf War.
And, by and large, the media gave him a pass. Chris Matthews called the original war for oil comment “an astounding development,” but most everyone else was too busy picking over the bones of the Wright/Obama carcass to give it much play.
Yup.

The Haves And The Have-nots
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
Whoa.
Everyone, including the thousands of state workers in Nashville, have to walk outside to specified areas if they should want to smoke.
State law prohibits smoking inside state buildings, but for those who want to skirt the law and know the right people, there’s a room upstairs for them.
“It’s hypocritical. It’s a double standard, and there’s no way to justify it,” said Drew Johnson of the Tennessee Center for Policy Research.
According to an I-Team report, those who want to get around the smoking ban inside Legislative Plaza need to know state Rep. Joe McCord, R-Maryville, and if they’re really connected, they will be invited back to a room set up for smoking.McCord would not speak with the I-Team’s Jeremy Finley on the record.About two years ago, the state Legislature passed a law that banned smoking in any state buildings
Ben Cunningham pointed this out and links to the lengthy story at WSMV.
And folks wonder why we don’t trust elected folks. Do as I say, not as I do.
Sheesh.

The Webby Awards Announce Winners
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
Stephen Colbert is a winner … on the web.
Colbert became the “Greatest Living American” in the eyes of Google thanks to his fans who took to the Internet and “Google-bombed” him to the top. They did so by posting comments all over the Web that contained his name and “Greatest Living American” to make him the top result when anyone searched Google for the title.
Colbert’s use of the Internet, including challenging the “truthiness” of Wikipedia, attracting 78 members per minute to the Facebook page for his candidacy for president and his ability to get fans to rack up donations online for DonorsChoose.org earned him the award.
The Webby Awards honor excellence on the Internet, including Web sites, online film and video, mobile Web sites and interactive advertising from around the world.

Having To Do The Unthinkable
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
Tom Jones of Smart City Memphis is living a parent’s worst nightmare.
My daughter died Friday.
Those are the hardest four words I have uttered in my whole life.
Emily Jones Shrader was 32 years old and died at 7:40 Friday morning seven weeks after being diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor.
My condolences to Mr. Jones and his family.

Five Reasons To Love Willie Nelson
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
I dig Willie Nelson. I think a lot of people do. He seems real in a plastic world.
The New York Daily News has five reasons that he’s groovy.
This one stuck out to me:
3. He didn’t stick us with the tab.
When Nelson found out he owed a few million dollars to the IRS, he didn’t hire someone to cut a deal.
He said, look, I owe this, just give me a little time, I’ll pay it.
Then he did.
Yeah, Willie is cool.

Indiana Primary – 40 Years after Kennedy
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
This is not only a really fine bit of writing but it’s also a lesson in history.
The talking heads of the TV babblerati certified it to be true — this is the first time in 40 years the Democratic primary election in Indiana has been important. That would be 1968, and Robert Kennedy had just jumped into the race for the Democratic nomination after Lyndon Johnson had just bowed out.
I know. I was alive. And I was there — in Indiana, the weekend before the primary election.
Read the rest of it. It’s amazingly good.

Tiki Barber And Pat Buchanan
Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 06-05-2008
I woke up this morning and did some early morning blogging over at Music City Bloggers while drinking my morning joe watching CNN.
The audio started acting wonky and it sounded like John Roberts was the devil. Of course I don’t want my newscasters to sound like Beelzebub so I turned the channel to, and the irony it burns, Morning Joe.
As it is primary day, I thought watching the news would give me some insight into the election. Joe had Pat Buchanan on.
I have to tell you, Pat B. always looks mad. He looked mad when he was on Crossfire a kajillion years ago. He just has this look of perpetual pissdom.
Well, they played all of the negative ads running giving everyone a freebie on national television and I kinda zoned out because we won’t know until tonight.
Here’s what I think, and I could be wrong, will happen today. Obama has to close the deal if he wants the nomination. Clinton, well, I’m not happy with her at all right now but she’s probably going to do well.
More democrat fighting for six more weeks! Woot. *snark*
Who knows at this point. All I know is I’m still suffering Election Fatigue Syndrome.
So, back to my morning, Tiki Barber and Pat Buchanan are pontificating about Hillary Clinton as I write this.
Huh?
This is a combination of political punditry I would have never considered in my entire life.
