Hits And Misses

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 05-06-2008

I have been asked on occasion why I don’t branch out and move to the city as it suits me. As I have lived in several cities including Nashville, Montreal and Amsterdam and am always on the constant lookout for the perfect sushi roll, I always reply if I found a job where I could pay my expenses and still afford the perfect sushi roll, I’d take it in a minute. How’s that for an impossibly long, rambling sentence?

With that said, it’s stuff like this that scares the bejeebus out of me and makes me take pause.

The 2008 downturn in the local economy and continued weakness in many traditional advertising sectors have led The Commercial Appeal to announce a reduction in work force.

Readership of the print and online versions of the newspaper continues to be outstanding, but slippage in major account, recruitment and automotive advertising over the past 12 months will result in the loss of about 55 jobs at the newspaper, said publisher Joe Pepe

And that, campers, is one thing that anyone in the news biz is going to watch. I’m a bit behind the curve in learning certain aspects of digital media and by trying to educate myself with limited resources, I have to admit it’s not easy. It’s a lot of hit and miss. And I would be lying if I didn’t say that the misses sometimes outweigh the hits.

But I am trying. And I would recommend others do as well.

The world of communication is changing.

Post Of The Day

Grandefille doesn’t talk about politics much at her blog much, but when she does, I’d recommend you listen.

But for the love of your country and your children, don’t flounce off in a huff and vote for the opposition just for spite.

ETA: Well, this is a bit more reassuring to me. As I think I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I’ve long been of the opinion, as this campaign has draaaaagged on, that whichever one is in the Oval Office and whichever one is in the Old Executive Office Building isn’t going to matter a whit; they’re both going to have their hands full fixing this horrorshow.

Daddy Drinks Because I Cry

Squirrel Queen sent us an email of really whacked out T-shirts for babies. I have no idea where they came from.

I have no children but if I did, they’d be wearing one of these shirts.

Tattoos

I love List of the Day. Today’s treat is ridiculous celebrity tattoos.

I cannot imagine what this person was thinking when they got this tattoo. Of course, Will Ferrell in Elf is also on the list.

Alf? I guess it’s better than a Mom tattoo.

Or not.

This world is a big, strange place, isn’t it.

A Million Dollars To Find Bigfoot

Posted by newscoma | Posted in Newscoma | Posted on 05-06-2008

Well, I could use a million dollars.

Binocular manufacturer Bushnell, along with “Field & Stream” magazine, have teamed up to offer $1 million to anyone who can “provide an unaltered photograph/video, verified and substantiated by a panel of scientific experts [including a zoologist and biologist], the evidence required to prove a Sasquatch/Bigfoot/Yeti exists.”

The contest started a few days ago and ends Dec. 15, but before heading out to claim your million, note that the rules’ fine print states that they are not liable for any injury incurred during a Bigfoot attack. A good quality Bigfoot image would make history; most photos are of such consistently poor quality that within the Bigfoot research community there’s even a name for a typical blurry “Bigfoot” image: blobsquatch.

Blobsquatch? Heh.

I gotta get busy.
