i gotta say...not only is she a very intelligent woman, but she's got balls. let's face it, to run for vp - with your 17 year-old daughter preggers - on the REPUBLICAN ticket? OMG.

BIG STEEL BALLS

of course, the fact that she's beautiful, like super-model beautiful, doesn't hurt for the empty-headed "look how hot she is" vote

note that i did not SPECIFICALLY say male vote...

Naw, you have TN football this week. This Monday night at 8pm lark ain't so good for me. I can't really stay up - too many important meetings on Tuesday. And I can't listen to the cached broadcast, 'cause I don't know if I can make it the whole day without knowing.

I don't think the inexperience thing is such a good tactic. Gov Palin has held public office since 1992 (city council) - Barack Obama since 1997. And it sounds like she was active in the community before that.

She's from a small town. So what? Me, too. Only big city folk can hold high office? I don't think that's going to play too well in the "flyover states".

Do I like her positions on social issues? No, I do not. There's the real substantive area.

I'm one of those disaffected Hillary Clinton voters who is supposed to cynically manipulated by this move. Right. I'm not stupid. But I am impressed that John McCain is asking for my vote - something Barack Obama hasn't done yet. He's confident that HRC supporters will vote for him, so I guess he feels asking is beneath him. Only HRC and one blog commenter have asked me to vote for BO.

Frankly, I'm absolutely THRILLED that Gov Palin was picked. It's politics and PR, but I don't think it's a gimmick. She has a pretty impressive record. Was it a gimmick that Barack Obama picked an older white guy with foreign policy experience? Is it a gimmick when the GOP nominee picks someone with more authentic Conservative credentials and executive experience than he has? McCain is saying "We believe a woman can be on a winning ticket." And it wasn't a desperation move either, McCain is further ahead in the polls than he has any right to be at this point. I like that kind of confidence. I think it makes a difference. Doesn't mean I'm going to vote for her. But I'm going to have to think twice about voting against her.

I agree with your post (plus I love your tag, Feminism is Fun -- I might steal it). I have to say though this election has been and will continue to be about gender and race in one way or another. I first was excited and optimistic that it would not be so. But I think the MSM had their nasty hands in things. However, you have to separate out the candidates who have worked hard to EARN their credentials among their supporters, whether it is a female candidate or a black candidate. I supported Hillary because she was a woman. But I also felt she worked hard to get to the point of being a "good" candidate. As a woman, I want to always work hard to support women who work hard to achieve leadership positions AND who in turn support (personally or politically) other women being able to do the same. I will not support a woman candidate if she holds positions which do not empower other women. Honestly, I don't think many women (except for those who have always been swing voters) will vote for John McCain just for his VP choice. I think the MSM again... have their nasty little hands in things.

Palin's photogenic, too, and - bonus - she's shorter than McCain. She also doesn't look as vapid as Dan Quayle. But she's still 5'6" and trying to wade in 100 fathoms.

If you plucked up Wasilla, AK, and plopped it down up toward Cape Girardeau, Palin's successor would be goading the local Chamber of Commerce to claim that Wasilla was bigger than Martin or Union City. But it would be smaller than either. Wow!

Lee, I'm not impugning Palin's intelligence by comparing her to Dan Quayle. Insted, the comparison rests on *why* she was picked. Bush Sr. picked Quayle because he was younger and (so Bush thought) photogenic. Palin was picked because she's female. In both cases, substance and experience went out the window in favor of purely superficial criteria.

I'm sure she's a lot smarter than Quayle, but that would (as you said) be an awfully low bar for her to clear.

I understand Miss Coma where you come from, and will behave here in the future.

Concerning what some of the other commentors have said here, you would think that after misunderestimating both in 2000 and in 2004, that folks wouldn't be misunderestimating in 2008.

I'd guess you'd be wrong.

First of all, you just don't do it. Second of all, Biden can be a gasbag notorious for his own gaffes. Third, if you keep calling her Dan Quayle and she doesn't end up goofing like Dan Quayle, you just set a really low bar for your opponent to clear. There is a reason political activists lowball their expectations while highballing their opponents.

I pretty much agree with everything Russ stated. Don't have much to add other than this: She was so recently mayor of a TINY town, and I really don't think her brief stint as governor of a sparsely populated state gives her the necessary experience & exposure for the job of VP. Biden, Obama, and McCain are all much more experienced as U.S. Senators. Maybe that's my bias, but I think she won't stand a chance against Biden.

That, coupled with her awful views on abortion, oil, etc, makes her just a trophy for McCain to bring around with him (Cindy on one arm, Sarah on the other??)

Great post.
