Hate Crime In Brooklyn

It’s Call in Gay Day to protest the ban on gay marriage.

Gay people today are being asked to call in with a protest somewhat like the blue flu. I don’t know how effective that’s going to be quite honestly because the economy is in the crapper but maybe pointing out what goes on in this country might be another way of showing that everyone is of value.

Everyone.

There is this about two Ecuadorian brothers walking arm and arm after a night out on the town being beaten with broken bottles and a baseball bat in what appears to be a hate crime. One of those brothers died after the violent attack in Brooklyn:

Early Sunday, less than a mile from where Mr. Sucuzhanay worked, he and his brother Romel were set upon by men the police said they believed were strangers.

The brothers were walking home from a bar, arms around each other, the police said. At the corner of Bushwick Avenue and Kossuth Place, three men riding in what a witness described as a maroon or red sport utility vehicle spied the brothers and shouted anti-gay and anti-Hispanic slurs.

One of the men hit Jose over the head with a bottle, and the driver of the car swung an aluminum baseball bat at his head, the police said. He fell to the floor as the three attackers, who were black, continued kicking and punching him, the police said. The beating ended only when Romel held up his cellphone and said he was calling the police.

Killed by ignorance. Killed by hatred.

Killed because of brown skin. Killed because their perpetrators allegedly thought they were gay.

One brother, arm-in-arm with his other brother who he will now bury.
