The Death Of A Small Town Part 1

Amie Vanderford went to Cairo, IL. It’s a city that my parents talked often about and talked of a different place than the one I’ve seen. Actually, it was my folks that gave me an oral history of what it was and what it became.

The town died in some ways many years ago and is a shadow of what it once was.

This is fantastic and I encourage you read every word and see her photos at Flickr.

I’ve been to Cairo. I went with a friend whose family spent much time there when she grew up. It is a devastating trip for those who have fond memories of a terrific city on the rivers.

It just keeps dying. It’s been a few years but I went up there tooling around and came away so sad. It wasn’t what my parents had told me and you saw it dying in front of you.

    So sad.
