Gardening In High Heels

Yesterday, I had to deal with robots (seriously, I haven’t spoken to a real person at an unemployment office since I filed two weeks ago) and I was a bit frustrated. I still don’t know what’s going on but I keep hoping. Apparently someone is supposed to call back. I’m sure it will be Robby the Robot.

I say that navel-gazing bit of fluff to say this. I have some groovy friends.

My friend, Realtor Mom, and I met for lunch where we ran into KK. We were talking and I mentioned that I was headed to the Farmer’s Market here in Hoots because if I don’t eat a good tomato and some peaches ‘n’ cream corn soon, that I was going to spontaneously combust. Realtor Mom was like, hells to the no, you have to come and get some stuff in my garden.

KK and I were very excited at this prospect and as I’d been dealing with my robot overlords all day, I was stoked.

Realtor Mom was headed to a closing later in the day and was dressed to kill. I, of course, was dressed in my depression unemployment clothes so I was good for garden picking. When we got to the garden, RM headed into the corn, cucumbers, peppers and okra with wild abandon.

In heels, mind you.

It was glorious and I have to tell you, I adore that woman. I like Realtor Mom a whole heck of a lot (and her husband, Realtor Dad, makes me guffaw. I saw him earlier this week as he was blasting Jimi Hendricks from his truck as he pulled to the wrong side of the road to say howdy. You can’t get any better than that. They also introduced me to The Engineer and the Grad Student, who make my day everytime I see them.) She was amazing picking purple okra in her outfit and her heels. I asked her about her closing later and she just smiled. “It will be fine. I’ll dust them off and I’ll be good as new.”

KK and I got huge bags of freshly picked produce and headed to see Miss Sherri to tell tales of our gardening experience. You do that with Miss Sherri because she is like a group mother. She just makes things better.

Although we were without power for most the night due to some wicked storms that rolled into Hoots Common, the afternoon was just about as good as one can be. KK and I like to talk about music, politics and pop culture and it’s nice to have someone to do that with.

I still don’t know what’s going on with the unemployment, but at least I’m a bit more optimistic because I didn’t feel so alone by the end of the day.

Navel-gazing, my friends, but sometimes living in the moment with good people just makes things better.
