Bloggers On The Left And Right Discuss The Constitution

Roane State Community College is brilliant. Later today liberal blogger Aunt B. and conservative blogger Terry Frank will set down in a forum celebrating Constitution Day discussing their takes on the most important document and guide that this country has ever known.

I’m stoked. You see, the obvious implications of two bloggers who have been a bit contentious toward each other at times as they are political opposites is secondary to the bigger picture.

In my humble opinion, the issue that looms here is that the college has set up an opportunity for two complete opposites in the world of politics to sit down and have a … wait for it … conversation.

It goes without saying that they aren’t going to agree, but they are going to be setting up something that doesn’t happen very often and that is presenting a dialogue.

In a country where no one is agreeing on much of anything, the idea that these two women will face off to discuss why the Constitution is important to both of them. In that respect, there will be consensus because it’s important to all of us.

It’s a good thing.

    Well, that should be easy….

Aunt B: “The constitution is freedom’s insurance policy. It is our written guarantee that freedoms out forefathers fought so hard for are protected by law and afforded to all Americans equally.”

Terry Frank: “GUNS!!! Tea Parties!!! It’s a silly piece of paper unless what it says agrees with me and Glenn Beck!!!!!
    And…uh…..um……GUNS!!!!!
No health care for anyone! How would cemeteries make any money?!
    It’s my tax money! WAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!
    Tea party!!!!”

Poor B. The things people endure in the name of nice is absolutely depressing. She should just take the opportunity to slap the kook in the mug on general principals.

    *Sigh*

Terry Frank: 9th amendment , 10th amendment. Free speech.

    Aunt B: My (expletive) itches.

Terry Frank: Freedom, liberty, free market, constitution, personal responsibility, bill of rights.

Aunt B: F$%^ off!. My (Expletive) still itches!

Going to do battle with a mentally unstable person who has a tenuous grasp of the issues to be discussed has got to be a real treat for Terry. Hold out for the video. My money is on Terry. BIG.

I thought it was nice that a conversation about a document we all love from diverse bloggers being held at a community college was being attempted because we basically all want the same things. I applaud both women for being a part of this experiment.
    A conversation.
    **sigh**
    Silly me.

I love that they are both going to be there and both talking about that issue as well. When conservatives talk about their points of view and the law/constitution they usually look good. While they both may have similar goals (even that I sometimes question) I think on the way to get there they diverge greatly.

On that we agree, Rep. And I do think this is good for people to have a conversation and it’s a fabulous thing for the blogosphere, where conversations from differing political sides can come together and have a reasonable sit down discussion, although their idealogy might vary. I was a disappointed with your first response because that doesn’t help the dialog. I realize that you disagree with the other side of the aisle.
I’m GLAD, though, to hear this response though and I thank you for coming back here and clarifying.
People can agree to disagree. It will be interesting to see the final results.

My first post here. I organized the Roane State event. First I would like to thank both presenters. Both ladies were a hit with the crowd. Each of them faced difficult questions from the crowd and replied in a calm and thoughtful manner. The “debate” ended up becoming a debate on health care.

Terry went first and delivered what I would call a scholarly an inspiring take on freedom of speech and the nature of man. I’m a history professor and heard another history professor tell Terry that it was the best speech on the Constitution that he had heard in years. This after they had argued politely about their differing perspectives on evolution.

B was as funny and engaging in person as online. She did not use the colorful expletives from some of her posts. She discussed the often overlooked 9th Amendment and our natural rights as people and the powers of the government. She made her points as well.

The bloggers even agreed several times and politely crossed swords on topics ranging from evolution to abortion.

WE NEED MORE OF THESE POLITE SIT DOWNS IN THIS COUNTRY.

Casey, I was very excited to here about this debate. I am a true believer that having this kinds of conversation is a wonderful thing. Good job and I can’t wait to read about the debate on both of their blogs.

It’s a good thing when people with differing opinions can sit down and have a conversation. Good for Roane State for hosting this.

I gotta admit, Rep, the same scenario crossed my mind.
