Deep Thoughts On Cannibalistic Advertising

The new M&M’s commercials in where we see our round candy talking treats trying to run from their own demise on a grocery store conveyer belt. Alas, the red M&M does not escape his fate and we see in the next scene he is in a grocery bag 9tutorialscom-chocolate-mmwith his friend, the yellow M&M who, it is determined in the dialogue, is not very bright and is, in fact, rather stupid.

Red accepts his fate, knowing that he has been purchased to be eaten.

It is sad seeing him be sent to his death where he will be devoured by humans who know of his deliciousness.

This commercial creeps Squirrel Queen and I out.

What about all of the signs on BBQ joints with the fat, happy pig all but carving out his ribs for you. Makes you think.

I don’t like those either. AARRGGHH!!

  3. It grosses me out that the M&M scoots his butt across the price scanner like a dog scratching his booty on the carpet. Weird. Wouldn’t he scan the M on his belly instead?

The one that used to Freak. Me Out. was for the little bite-sized—I think—Butterfingers, wherein the full-size candy bar writhes and screams in agony as pieces of his body pop off to form the smaller counterparts. NOT COOL.

I had to wander across this post just moments after eating a small bag of M&Ms.

    :(

  9. I honestly think I was traumatized by the Pillsbury dough boy as a kid. I saw that finger poking him in the stomach and I would yell, NO!!! RUN!!!! RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!

I’m so glad you posted this. The anthropomorphic characters in food advertising creep me out BIG time. What about the sugar coated wheaties who praise the kid for being smart in class cuz he had a good breakfast? They’re so cute and they’re gonna be EATEN?

I mean really, what ARE they thinking?

I agree. I think this whole advertising thing doesn’t look at the big picture.

    What are they thinking?

SNL did a parody of masochistic food mascots a few years back with an animated chicken mascot interacting with a live-action family in a fake fast food commercial:
