Duff And Kirby

May 9, 2010 - Author: newscoma - Comments are closed

Seizures began late Friday night with Kirby. We got this very strong-willed miniature schnauzer the day before my oldest niece was born. Eight months later, Duff came into our world.

They both died together last night. I knew it was coming. They were both 14-years-old. Duff was suffering from cancer and there wasn’t anything we could do. Kirby was blind.

I knew late Friday that the end was coming for Kirby. Duff was also in pain from the cancer. We gave them baby aspirin but it couldn’t cut through the suffering.

I know with our state in such a mess, that losing two dogs at once doesn’t seem like a lot when people died here in the last week.

But they were our friends and we were their humans. We were advised to let them go together because, although Duff probably had another week in her, it was best for her to go with her best buddy.

Stephanie and I are heartbroken but we had many good years with both of them and we miss them. Mabel does too. She keeps looking for them.

I knew I would lose them. I just didn’t know they would die together on the same day.

We buried them on the farm late last night.

And we grieve.

They will be missed. And our hearts are broken with the loss.

  1. Oh, wow. I’m so sorry for your loss. Truly. But I also read this as if they wanted to go together, and that seems just beautiful. I’ll keep you both in my thoughts today.

  2. Omg Trace. I’m so, so, so sorry. I’m crying. I know they had been doing so poorly for a while and am glad they are no longer suffering, but I know how hard this was for y’all.

I’m glad they went together. I wish I had done that with my Lucy and her son, who went a month later, but at the time I didn’t know he was going to go as downhill as he did. It would have been better for them to go together too tho.

Love and hugs to you, Steph and Mabel. I’ll be thinking of you all.

  5. Sorry to hear this. You two were good humans. Our condolences to you both.

  6. I’m so sorry you have to go through this, and twice at once. I hope it means that Duff and Kirby will have each other to play with in the big sunny pasture.

Lisa and I are think of y’all on the Mother’s Day. Love to your family.

So sorry for you guys and thinking about you. This week was just not the time for this, but then there never really is a good time. I know a part of you is inconsolable and will be for a while. Hugs.

Knowing that others have suffered tragedy lately doesn’t make your loss easier to bear. :( My heart goes out to you.

I cried when I read this post. My heart goes out to you both. It’s so touching that you understood that neither would want to go on living without the other.

So sorry. It’s hard to realize that these furry family members are just as mortal as we are — and with briefer life spans. You think that the love keeps them alive — and it probably does for a while. Carry on, good heart!

I am so sorry for your loss. Losing a pet hurts so much. You gave them a good life, try to find some solice in that. ((hugs))

I’m sorry to hear about your losses. It’s for the best that they went together, though I know that’s not much comfort to those left behind.

Oh, ‘Coma. Oh, SQ. I’m so sorry. Losing loved ones is never easy, regardless of the number of feet they have. Hugs to you both and treats to Mabel.

    Love you!

  16. Oh, man. I am so sorry. That makes me so sad, and you don’t have to diminish your pain about it, it’s very real.

    Trace and Steph –

I am so sorry for your losses. Please let us know if we can do anything at all.

    Love to you both.

  18. always devastating to lose a pet – two at once? must be crushing….

so sorry to hear of your double loss, ‘Coma. Dogs are my favorite people and I know they were a part of your family and most likely so happy to have been a part of your home.

  20. I echo what everyone else has said–your grief is your grief, and you have every right to it, regardless of anything else. For what it’s worth, I think it’s beautiful that you let them go together. They’re just fine now.

    Sending many hugs.

ugh… so sorry for you, Steph & Mabel – that’s just an awful loss and can’t be discounted. Our pets are often more a part of our lives than our families and best friends – often they ARE our family and best friends. I’m glad they could go together for their sake – that is, as Kate stated, beautiful. And that you game them a loving home all those years – they lived with love and died with love and may be the most blessed creatures that ever were.

This is heart-wrenching. Many hugs to you, Steph, and Mabel.

  23. Trace& Steph,
Words cannot express how I feel for the two of you and I really mean that. They are in a better place. This week has been one of the worst weeks in my life also dealing with the loss of The Stable. I guess there are alot of things that we don’t realize how much we miss until they are gone. I miss seeing each and every one of you. I feel so alone. I guess time will be the only thing that will heal our hearts. I am so sorry!

I am so sorry – I know it hurts and hurts deep. Dogs are called man’s best friend for a reason they love us unconditionally and we give them a part of our heart. Going together lets them cross Rainbow Bridge together – they are waiting for you. Luv you guys – and give Mable a big hug for me.

  25. by Meg

So sorry. Such cute little guys too. I can’t imagine.

  26. by Sharon

Very appropriate that they left this world together. Not enough words to sum up faithful, loyal companions like that.

It’s so sad to hear of the loss of your pups. It’s so wonderful to hear of the love you shared with your pups. I’m sorry they are gone and hope you keep them in your hearts. The pain may not get better but the loving memories will.

  28. So sorry Trace. So sad to hear this news.

    I just heard, precious ones.

We all grieve with you, but we also rejoice that both of those crazy pups will get a good nap and then be waiting for you all on the other side. After all, who deserves heaven more than dogs?

Our hugs and kisses will not end; they just get a bit soggier from time to time. We love all y’all.
