I was a reporter back in the day and I must tell you that I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything quite like the lies and misconceptions being hawked in the mainstream media these days.
I like facts. I do.
When news becomes entertainment and Lindsey Lohan grabs headlines for endorsing Mitt Romney (because we all waited with baited breath for that) it is amazing to me. Just gobsmacking.
There really isn’t any point to all of this. We live in a Honey Boo Boo Child world.
I do think it is ironic that folks expected Vice-President Joe Biden to perform poorly last night. Biden has always been excellent in situations like debates. I think Charles Pierce’s take hits it on the head.
And Matt Taibbi could not be more accurate in his analysis of the media in this election cycle.
Biden did absolutely roll his eyes, snort, laugh derisively and throw his hands up in the air whenever Ryan trotted out his little beady-eyed BS-isms.
But he should have! He was absolutely right to be doing it. We all should be doing it. That includes all of us in the media, and not just paid obnoxious-opinion-merchants like me, but so-called “objective” news reporters as well. We should all be rolling our eyes, and scoffing and saying, “Come back when you’re serious.”
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, policy is not sexy but it is important. And the public does need to know the specifics from local to state and nationally because it affects their day to day lives.
It’s up to the media to provide that. Yeah, there is a lot of noise out there right now, but facts are what we need right now more than anything. This isn’t an indictment of reporters, mind you, but the current business model that has turned news into TMZ.
