The Puppy Adoption Palooza Continues

Friday, April 3rd, 2009

First of all, I want to say thanks to all of the wonderful people on Facebook, Twitter and all around blogtopia who have helped us in our efforts to give away the puppies to good homes. Yesterday, we gave three away, and with Zoey already spoken for, our grand total is four gone and five more to go.

The three that were adopted yesterday have been marked as adopted in this post. I have to thank Matt Maxey, Sarcastro and Sharon Smith for adopting Tootsie Roll, Gulager and Bandit (who is now named Foster.) They are the best.

In the post that I linked to, I still have Dot, Jobe, Handsome, Tucker and Helen Thomas up for adoption.

Due to the fantastic assistance from Trudy and Katrina at the University of Tennessee at Martin, we also have a couple of people coming by later today for possible adoption. We will keep you up to date on how this goes.

I wanted to address some questions that I’ve been asked about the puppies here so everyone knows the history.

On January 1st, the Coma family adopted a stray. When it appeared the dog, who is now known as Pinks, was headed for the dog pound where dogs are only kept for three days, we decided to bring her into the fold.

Little did we know she was pregnant.

When we took her to the vet, we realized we were going to be the proud owners of puppies.

Pinkie gave birth to 12 puppies on February 18th and in the first 24 hours, two of them died. The puppies appear to have some Australian Shepherd in them, and we don’t know who the father/s are. Here they are at one week old.

As we already have five dogs, keeping this litter is impossible. The dogs are not house broken and have not been spayed or neutered. They are, for lack of a better word, as is. We contacted a dozen No-Kill shelters who could not take the puppies, and thus, bloggers and friends across the state and beyond have offered their assistance to help get them adopted.

Ivy at Animal Shak even made this offer:

I’d like to personally offer that I’ll drive up to 6 hours in any direction from Nashville to bring a puppy to you if you can adopt. I would also drive out to Charleston, SC or Wilmington, NC, if you live there and want to adopt.

I will be bringing the adopted puppies to Nashville in the next couple of days and any that Ivy can bring to prospective parents are on the way as well.

I cannot tell you how humbled I am by the assistance given to our family and to these puppies in finding them good and safe homes.

Pinks thanks you too.

Needing Some Help With Puppy Adoption

Sunday, March 29th, 2009

The puppies are nearly five weeks old. The commune is becoming entirely too small to handle 15 dogs and our lives are no longer our own.

I have to tell you, I love each and every one of these guys. I saw them born and have watched them being a little pack of Puppy Hooligans.

Alas, it’s time for them to find a home.

We have had five people who wanted one have to back out due to personal reasons, which happens.

Zoey has been adopted and will meet her new family on April 20th.

I do have some folks saying they will come and look at the pups for possible adoption this week. However, I’m going to have to do the unthinkable (and the most realistic thing) and probably take them to a N0 Kill rescue shelter and I am putting an ad into the paper this week to give the remaining puppies away. When we adopted Pinks, we had no idea that she was pregnant and we took her to get the vet, we were told that she was. This is the first time in my adult life I’ve been around the birth and growth of new puppies. It’s been exciting, but Homer and I already have five dogs total.

Now, Homer is adopting one of the black puppies who they family has named Arthur Guinness (formally known as Blackie)

All of these pups are ready for a home, first come, first serve.

They are very sweet.

101_0930

And very much a handful when you have 10 of them. Man, they crack me up.

101_0924

We call this one Handsome.

101_0921

We have several pups which are white and have black patches on their eyes.

101_0927

I call this one Gulager.

Anyway, if you are eager to adopt a puppy, the time is now. We have even sought legislative help from Minority Whip Mark Maddox. He’s not a very good puppy pimp, but he did his best.

And, Mabel and Jura have taken to hiding from the pups. They are on the steps, but the symbolism of this photo looks like they are in jail.

So, this week we are going to aggressively look at homes for the puppies with folks we know.

It’s sad really. I like them, I just can’t keep them. So, dear Internet, if you can spread the word that a blogger needs some help putting pups in good homes, please let me know.

Puppies Eating My Toes

Wednesday, March 25th, 2009

I realize this is a blurry picture, but when puppies bite your toes off, it’s hard to hold a camera still.

Bigfoot couldn’t deal with these puppies. He would run off frightened by their steely gazes, hide in a root cellar and cry.

I used to have free will. No more. Now it is puppy will.

What is free will, you might ask. It has to do with puppies eating at your soul and making you succumb to their whims.

This is what I have learned during Puppy Palooza.

You are becoming very sleepy. The puppy’s cuteness is making you very, very tired. You want this puppy to live with you in your house, condo, apartment, farm, car with you.

This puppy loves you. You can think of nothing but the puppy.
