The Dance Stylings Of George Bush

Friday, February 22nd, 2008

I think we can safely say that our president will never be asked to be on Dancing With  The Stars although if he was, I might watch it.

McCain Scandal Reignites The Issue Of Political Favors

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

So the John McCain story hit last night and as the blogosphere hashes it out as well as mainstream news, I’ve had all night to think about it.

This isn’t a titillatingly story about infidelity or anything of that nature I don’t think. I could be wrong but I just don’t think it is.

It’s actually more complex than that. This is more about a relationship between a senator and a lobbyist and if that friendship helped her firm out in passing, and stifling, legislation. The realist in me says this is what lobbyists do. The political junkie in me says “What’s New? This crap happens all the time.”

And then I’m like, damn, I’m so tired of all of this because we are being governed by people whose agenda are swayed by the few.
But there are a few issues. First of all, the NYT’s story has little meat to it and not much gravy. There are too many unanswered questions in the bulk of the story. The timing of the release is also suspect and as Ginger stated in the comments of my last post, this could be the reason that Huckabee has stuck around. But in this generation’s news cycle that is so different than, let’s say Watergate or even the Iran-Contra scandal, this could be old hat by Saturday morning. Just opining here.

Josh Marshall, who just received the George Polk Award for his series on the US Attorney Firings (yep, a blog won. Welcome to the new world) writes this:

This is an odd story for a couple reasons. We know that the McCain Camp went to the mattresses to get this story spiked back in December. And some heavy legal muscle was apparently brought to bear. When a story has to go through that much lawyering it often comes out pretty stilted and with some obvious lacunae. And this one definitely qualifies. Reading the Times piece it struck me as a bit of a jumble. The reference to a possible affair is there in the lede. But then most of the piece is a rehash of a lot of older material about McCain’s record before getting back to the relationship with Iseman.

You see, the story has to do with the persona of McCain and not so much with the issue of impropriety of an intimate nature. And McCain tried to bury it. He’s been in a scandal before, you know. Let’s take a walk through history, shall we?

Mr. McCain, 71, and the lobbyist, Vicki Iseman, 40, both say they never had a romantic relationship. But to his advisers, even the appearance of a close bond with a lobbyist whose clients often had business before the Senate committee Mr. McCain led threatened the story of redemption and rectitude that defined his political identity.

It had been just a decade since an official favor for a friend with regulatory problems had nearly ended Mr. McCain’s political career by ensnaring him in the Keating Five scandal. In the years that followed, he reinvented himself as the scourge of special interests, a crusader for stricter ethics and campaign finance rules, a man of honor chastened by a brush with shame.

Here’s a breakdown for you younguns who might not remember the Keating Five.

So the question is more about political favors than it is anything else. And it doesn’t surprise me that McCain tried to squash it. Any politician would do that no matter what party they are affiliated with.

So the other question is why did the New York Times play along for awhile and is there anythingiseman.jpg significant about the release of these allegations. And did the LA Times squash it completely.

This honestly isn’t going to help McCain but the reality is that the backlash may hurt the newspapers for a variety of reasons.

And Iseman is well-connected.

You know, it never ceases to amaze me that everyone loves a good sex scandal but I don’t think you’re going to find that here.

The real story is about political favors.

Shaq’s Shoes Help World Peace

Sunday, February 17th, 2008

I apologize ahead of time although I don’t really mean it but this made me look twice.

President Bush gave Tanzania’s president, who played basketball as a youth, a pair of Shaquille O’Neal’s shoes Sunday, along with millions of dollars to help combat disease and poverty in the east African country.

Shaq saves the world. Again.

Wait … millions.

Can Bush come to Hooterville? We need some folks fed.

No, seriously.

Bigfoot Declares Himself Winner

Sunday, December 30th, 2007

There was a battle I missed. I’m saddened by this as I’ve been busy, there are still roughly 1, 268 unread blog posts in my reader and yet, I feel sad because I let my big guy down.

Bigfoot lost to Yeti on the Doodle-Monkey blog during the year-end election.

It’s all my fault. If only I’d supported Bigfoot. If only I’d known. Stupid non-virtual life getting in the way of important matters.

**sigh**

But then again, Bigfoot took honors anyway citing he was, indeed, the self-declared winner.

Kinda like George Bush in 2000.

I <3 Doodle-Monkey.

A Day In The Life Of George

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

Well, it doesn’t include one I. Scooter Libby.

For now, at least.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Bush granted pardons Tuesday to carjackers, drug dealers, a moonshiner and a violator of election laws, but not to I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby, his vice president’s former top aide who was convicted in the case of the leaked identity of a CIA operative.

In all, Bush pardoned 29 convicts and reduced the prison sentence of one more, in the end-of-the-year presidential tradition.

Justice Department spokesman Erik Ablin said Bush has granted 142 pardons and commuted five sentences since taking office in 2001 — lagging far behind the pace set by most modern presidents.

Wondering to myself who the Decider will pardon at the end of next year as this is “an end-of-the-year presidential tradition.”

And that’s the end of his presidency.

Thinking, thinking…

You know, when he’s not working on his “legacy” which is sort of toilet-a-fied at the moment  but let’s go to this story, shall we.

President Bush says Iran must explain why it hid a past nuclear weapons program from United Nations inspectors. VOA White House Correspondent Scott Stearns reports, Iran says it is enriching uranium only for a peaceful civilian program to generate electricity.

President Bush is trying to keep international pressure on Iran after last week’s National Intelligence Estimate found that Tehran stopped its nuclear weapons program four years ago.

Umm, why is he doing this?

Seriously.

Harry Reid

Saturday, November 17th, 2007

Is Harry Reid finally playing hardball? Not Chris Matthews HardBall, because that show just gives me the hives, but some Democratic “Harry”ball?

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has decided to keep the chamber in session over the Thanksgiving break to block President Bush from making any unsavory recess appointments while Senators are out of town.

Give ‘em hell, Harry.

Incidentally, I like saying Harry outloud. I have no idea why.

Just saying.

Hillary Throws a “Bush” Bomb

Monday, November 12th, 2007

I’ve been waiting for the “Bush” grenade.

Yup … here it is.

In a sign of the increasingly bitter feud between the leading Democratic presidential contenders, Sen. Hillary Clinton’s campaign Monday accused John Edwards of acting like President Bush and dividing Democrats.

Going to have a cocktail and heat up the popcorn.

And, we wait.
